Winter Safety Indoors & Out

Posted On: 01/25/2016
Canadian winters can be beautiful...and chilly! Whether you're relaxing indoors by the warmth of your fireplace or exploring the many outdoor amenities in your community, be prepared and be safe. Check out these tips and enjoy what the Village Of Griesbach community has to offer this winter!
Winterizing Your Home
Whether you're a new or a long time homeowner, here's a helpful winter safety checklist:
• Check your heating system to make sure it is clean and working properly.

• Have your fireplace inspected and cleaned regularly.

• Test all smoke detectors and batteries monthly.

• Prevent carbon monoxide emergencies by installing a CO detector. Check the batteries often and   learn the symptoms of CO poisoning (including headaches, nausea and disorientation).

• Get prepared for weather related power outages by stocking up on non perishable food, first aid   kit, flashlights, extra batteries and a safe alternative heating source.

• Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches around your home and reapply as needed.
Outdoor Precautions For Cooler Weather
As you enjoy the outdoor amenities in your community (like Flanders Field Park and scenic walking paths), consider these safety tips:
• Wear temperature appropriate outdoor clothing. Layer warm clothing and wear gloves, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots with grips.

• Be aware of the wind chill factor. It may be colder than you realize.

• Consider taking a friend or a cell phone with you when you are participating in outdoor recreation.

• Let someone know when you are going to be outdoors for long periods of time.
• Remember that small children, older adults and pets are more susceptible to the cold.

The winter season will come and go, so make the most of it and be safe!
